MESSAGE FROM NEW YORK STATE TAX AND FINANCE - 10/7/25

STAR forms being removed from NY finance website:

The 2025-2026 Enacted State Budget included several provisions to simplify the STAR program.  Homeowners will no longer be required to submit an application to the assessor if they had an ownership change or if they have aged into the Enhanced STAR exemption.  Assessors will be notified of Basic STAR recipients who become eligible through the tax department.

If you have any questions or inquiries, please refer to your local Assessment office.

Homeowners who have a change in ownership will report that to the tax department through the Homeowner Benefit Portal- www.tax.ny.gov/star

Homeowners without internet access will call the hotline at 518-457-2036 weekdays between 8:30am and 4:30pm.

 

MAXIMUM 2025-2026 STAR SAVINGS (according to NYS Dept of Taxation & Finance)

  • DUNDEE SCHOOL DISTRICT, Town of Milo
    • Basic: $246
    • Enhanced: $690
  • PENN YAN SCHOOL DISTRICT, Town of Milo
    • Basic: $251
    • Enhanced: $687

If you had the Enhanced STAR last year, your renewal application will automatically be processed for you this year.

If you are currently/are turning 65 in 2026 and wanting to switch from the Basic STAR to a new Enhanced STAR, you will need to contact New York State directly.  Local townships are no longer allowed to process Enhanced STAR - please call 518-457-2036 weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

If you are new homeowner, you will need to contact the State directly to sign up for a new STAR.  For more information, click here.

For the Low-Income Senior Exemption: (for 2024 gross income under $28,399, age 65 and older), renewal forms will be mailed out in December of 2025.  If you do not receive this form, please visit here and fill out the form and submit it to the Town of Milo.  

If you feel you qualify and would like to apply for this exemption the first time, forms are available at Town Hall during business hours or you may print from online here.  It is highly recommended that you drop off your form in person so your form can be reviewed – proof of any income from 2024 is also required (Social Security Statement, pensions, etc).  If you do not file taxes, please fill out the Income Worksheet.
